Default oil leak

I have a 2000 durango with a 4.7. The front cover seal around the crankshaft has started to leak. Has anyone ran across this and can you change the seal without taking the cover off ? Thanks for any info.

Default RE: oil leak

Yeh I've run into it a couple of time with my Volvo and Camaro. No you need to take it off so you clean where the old seal is. If it isnt clean the new one will not seat correctly and you will have the same problem. I cant say I've done it on my D but its the same process as anyother. Remove the belt, Crank Pully (you can get a pully puller for 15 bucks at any auto store), Fan (if its crank drivin) and really whatever else is in your way. I havent seen under that hood, but its really easy. Get a Haynes Manual and it'll tell you. Just make sure you replace all of the gaskets and seals you take off with new ones. You can buy them all in a kit if your not sure.
