Runaway engine overrevved
My 2000 Durango with a 4.7 engine went balistic today. While traveling down the interstate at about 70 MPH it went to full throttle. The cruise control was not on, and as I looked to see if the floormat was in the way another driver changed lanes in front of me. I crammed on the brakes and swerved onto the shoulder. I kicked it out of gear and turned the key off, but it had already tached pretty high. I have no idea how high it went, as I was trying to keep it upright.
After stopping I checked the throttle linkage and it was not hung up, but when I restarted the engine it immediatly went to full throttle. I then noticed some smoke coming from under the vehicle. I checked the trans fluid and really smelled burned. Probably did it when I hammered the brakes with the engine racing. I restarted the engine a third time and it did not overrev, but there is a definite intermittant knock on the topside of the motor...ring, valve, piston? And it has a very noticable miss. It has good oil pressure and there are NO check engine or trans lights.
I have owned this rig since new, and have serviced it regularly. It has 108,000 miles on it, and of course the extended warranty went to 100k. I am extremely lucky that we did not get hurt, but now it looks like I need an engine and transmission.
Have any of you heard of this or had it happen too your Durangos? What are the chances that Dodge will work with me on fixing it?

Wow! I've never heard that one before. Sounds like you need to do a compression check on your motor. I hope you didn't blow it but it was possible. Before you started your ride the first time, did you look to see if the throttle was wide open or did you just check the linkage?
Look at you throttle body and see if its getting stuck. That hadhappened to be one my Camaro when I first built it one of the injectors wasnt in all the way and would tach out every time. I doubt thats your problem but clean your TB and see if that helps it could be sticking
First, glad to hear no one was hurt.
Second, sorry to hear your D has issues now.
Third, with something that serious I do not suggest working on it yourself. Take it to the dealer. Being 8000 miles out of warranty, you are most likely on your own with the cost of the repair... but they should be able to fix it.
Good luck.
