Default Retrieving problem codes

Hi everyone,
New to the forum. Have a 98 and 2000 D (his and hers). I have a check engine light on my 98 with 93000 miles (mostly trouble free). Does anyone know how to get them without going to the dealer. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried the basic stuff, check gas cap, disconnect battery but the light comes right back. It rund the same as before the light came on but it has me worried since it's been on for a week now.
Thanks for all your help

you need a OBD II scan tool to retrieve the code...if there is an Autozone in your area, they will retrieve the code for you (for free)...don't go to the dealer...you will get ripped off...it just happened to me...I just bought my own scan tool for $100 for future use...hope this helps

Thanks for a fast reply. I will try Auto Zone and probably buy my own OBD II tool since I have 4 cars to maintain (2 kids). Again thanks for your help. I will post my findings after the repair, maybe it will help some other poor soul with the same problem.

hold your odometer reset button in and turn your key to on position. you'll see the word check pop up in you mileage window. release button. it'll go through all your gauges. at the end it should show you your code if there's one there.
