Just bought 99 durango, good or bad idea
Just bought a used durango 99 4x4 towing package. Just wanted to know the the ups and downs of these vehicales. Did i make the right choice in buying one?
The 5.2L and more so the 5.9L are both bullet proof engines, so not too much to worry about there. Just keep up with routine maintenacne, oil changes every 3k.
The trannys can be hit or miss. They are definately not as tough as the motor. Make sure that you get it serviced right away to see what condition yours is in. Do a search here on trannys, and you can read MeanGreen horror story with his tranny.
The D is a bit of a hog on gas, but I'm sure you've already figured that much out.
good job on the tow package. It's big advantages are a larger tranny cooler, as well as a pwer steering cooler.
I have an '00 with the 4.7L and i have about 250,000km on it right now. still pulling strong and the body is in near mint condition. a small bubble on the roof from a stone chip, and a lil bit forming in the corner of the door from the weather stripping.
I think you made the right move, but I'm quite the Dodge fanatic.
let us know a lil about your D. engine, rear end gear ratio, mi/km.

I have a '99 5.9 4x4. It has been great. A bunch of towing, lots of snow driving, etc. My wife loves it...which is remarkable as she has little interest in vehicles, period.
I agree full heartedly with previous post. Do NOT skimp on who does your tranny servicing.
Good luck and ENJOY it

The fiancebought a used99 Durango, 5.2L, 4x4 w/ towing package. It's been pretty good, but we have had to do a lot of work to it. Replaced the water pump, intake manifold gaskets, and heater core. Since I've taken over the mainenance of it, it has been a very good truck. We towed a u-haul trailer from NC to WI and it did well through the mountains and everywhere else. But like deerang said, it was a hog on gas getting ~12 mpg for the trip. Right now she's getting ~14 mpg. Overall we are happy with it, but just be sure to keep ontop of your scheduled maintenance or you will be out big bucks later!
Hope this helps!
