Time to trade in Durango?
We own a 2000 Durango 4X4. We purchased the truck, new, in December 1999. The truck has 69000 miles. We were told that around 75-80k miles, we will need to start pouring money into the truck. Is this true? Bluebook is only about $10k and if we have to spend $3k for a new trannie or differential, it isn't worth fixing.
Please advise. Thanks.

The wife's '00 Durango just turned 100K... no mechanical problems, but I need to go to Autozone and pickup a new blinker cam switch which is only 52 clams. Other than that no probs.
Yes you will. Sell it to me now for $19.95 and save yourself the angst you are doomed to have exactly between 75-80K.
Now seriously, in the 69,000 you have owned it, has it proved reliable or not. If it has, what magic thing do you think will happen at 75k to cause you anything different. Have you kept up on the maintenance? The trans? Coolant flushes? Etc?
For anyone reading, properly take care of your D.... even if you drive it hard and drive the wheels off of it... and your D will take care of you.
IndyDurango <---2000 D, 170,000+ miles, still fast and solid as it ever was.

Sharkman:
No offense, but it sounds like the source of that comment wanted to sell you a new car.
It is certainly a personal decision as to how long to keep a vehicle, and there are some vehicles that are known to be problematic after a certain age or mileage. As Indy said, as long as your D has given you reliable service so far, it should continue to do so as long as you want to care for it and drive it. I think you will find that inreality your D is not worth anywhere near 10 K due to fuel prices and the fact that the used car market is quite flooded at the moment.
There is a dark blue 01 w/ 90k that has been in my local newspaper for weeks priced at $6500.
Other than a thirst for gasoline, the D is a pretty darned good vehicle for the price. My 01 is at 57K with no repairs other than upper ball joints under the recall, and the leaky aux. coolant pump.
Hope you decide to keep it around a while longer. You came to the right place for good info from folks who enjoy/appreciate the D for what it is.
