2000 Durango overheating
Hi all. I am a new member and have been having problems with a2000 2WD SLT. Ihad a new engine in at 60,000 miles. The original blew up the number one cylinder. Now it seems the auxillary fan is not kicking on and the engine overheats when idleing. I have a friend who is a mechanic and says the fan works, but is not getting a message to turn on. Possibly wiring problem? Computer? Can anyone help? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this model? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks
It is an electric fan on the 2000?
The fan switch is not working, they work by grounding themselves at certain temperatures therefore completing the curcuit and turning ont the fan, for a VERY temporary fix you can bypass it by hotwireing the fan directly to the battery.

My 2000 D 4X4 has a relay in the engine compartment for the Electric fan. You might check to see if you have one and if it's working. Also, if you have a multy-meter, disconnect the plug at the fan and see if you have 12 volt's when the engine is warmed up. If volt are there, fan is bad.Hope this helps. Ted

As mentioned, the primary fan on the Gen1 D is the mechanical fan on the front of the water pump. The Aux fan you speak of should only operate when the A/Cor defost mode is selected. Check your coolant level in the recovery tank as well as the cap on the top hose. If both levels are ok, then take a close look at the fan clutch. It should allow the fan to turn pretty freely when cold, and when the air across it is too warm it makes the fan speed increase to provide more cooling air.
If you are not experiencing the overheating while moving down the road, that again points to the clutch as the fan on the motor is not really effective at speeds above 35-40mph.
Good luck Don
