Default Sound System

Allright, ive got a durango with the infinity system in it... Ive been told that theyr two ohm speakers. I also know its a PIA to get my hands on 2 ohm speakers. So my question is what will practicly happen if i just put four ohm ones in? I am electricly inclined and understand that the pwer will drop because its inverse to resistance. But in all practicality does anyone know how much "quieter" it would get? And if not, anyone know of a cheap speaker i could throw in there at 2 ohms?? I have subs and in all honesty you donrt even need a good regualr speaker cuz with a sub and tweets it sounds okay.

So what I have read on the forum is infinity makes a 2 ohm speaker that is the right size. they are made alot better then the infinity that came in the durangos. I think that is what I'm going to try. do you have an aftermarket head unit or factory because most after markets have buit-in amps so you could by pass the factory and use the 4 ohm, Right(not sure)???? Let me know what you do and how it works out my speakers sound like crap.

I'm putting in some Infinity Kappa 60.7cs in the front doors and Infinity Kappa 62.7i in the rear doors. Both are 2 ohm, and from what I read on these forums they sound great and work great with factory head unit.

As above. Unless you are changing out the amp and headunit, stick with 2ohm Infinity's. Same size and Ohm and will sound fine.

4ohm will work, just not sound as good/strong.

I swapped my OEMs out for the Infinity Kappa 62.7i's and they will continue to work/will work better once I decide to get a better amp and headunit.

4 ohm speakers

Infinity reference series 6012/6022's

2 ohm speakers

Infinity Kappa series 2 or 3 way or component

I replaced my failed OEM with 6012's and it still sounds good.

The rule of thumb is you can always use higher resistance speaker ratings than what the amp is designed for to prevent the amp from being damaged. But not the other way around. Example:

you can use any ohm resistance rating that is equal to or higher than the amp rating. A amp designed for 4 ohm speakers, you can use 4 ohms or higher resistance rating without damaging your amp. But you cannot use 2 ohm speakers for amps designed for 4 ohms without risk of shorting out and damaging the amp.

So I am using 4ohm Infinity reference 6012's with 4 ohm rating on my OEM infinity system that used to use 2 ohm speakers.

Yes, Precisely what i was looking for Kensai. I am educated in electronics and knew that i could raise the resistance without damaging anything i just wanted to know how itd sound. So i mean as long as its "okay" im gonna go with 4 ohms... Thanks alot man!

One recommendation, try to keep those spacers that came with the OEM's. Without those spacers, you will lose some bass response.

Sure thing... All though i have 1000 watts of bass (two 12 inch subs) those little spacers make everything fit properly. Thanks man

Default RE: Sound System - 62.7i in rear

I've just installed 62.7i speakers in the rear and they completely blow (as opposed to blown which is what happened to the OEMs). I've got crap bass response and they sound tinny and weak.

With the OEMs I had to push the fader forward (well, that stick thingy) to drop some of the bass or adjust the eq. Now, I've got the bass eq cranked and I have to push the fader forward to get any bass at all since the fronts pump out a boatload more than the rear.

Now, sinceeveryone else raves about these speakers, I must assume that I've boned up the wiring somehow. You can't put the crossovers in wrong since each connector is a different size and so you can't make a mistake. I have the "tweeter" **** cranked all the way to the right which seems to get the most bass. For the connector to the door wire, I removed the harness from the OEM and sautered that to the crossover and plugged in.

Any chance reversing the polarity will give my symptoms (i.e. - I've wired it backwards)?
