2002 durango 4 x 4 SLT. 4x4 High Disengage Problems! --- SYMPTOMS BELOW!
[ol][*]Able to shift from 2x4 Low to 4x4 Low, then to 4x4 High without problems. Durango will not Disengage 4x4 high (even when put into "Neutral").[*]When attempting to swith back from 4x4 high to 4x4 low (or 2x4 low and in "Neutral"); L.E.D. Indicator lights ondash panel selector switch indicates a solid light engage on 4x4 high, and a flashing light to the 2x4 or 4x4 low position. According to Owners Manual, Indicator light(s) suggest that it recognizes my selection to switch out of 4x4 high but, QUOTE "While a shift has been requested but not yet completed, the LED for the desired transfer case position is flashed. A flashing operating mode LED for the desired
gear indicates that a shift to that position has been requested, but all of the driver controllable conditions
have not been met." UNQUOTE[*]When Durango is in "Neutral" and engaged in 4x4 high Durango creeps forward ever so slowly. It does not creep forward when in 2x4 low. And does not creep forward in 4x4 low... Only 4x4 High.[/ol]
Temp Solution - I got the Durango to Disengage by doing the following.
[ol][*]Put In "Neutral"[*]Hit the "Reset" Button next to the 4x4 engage/disengae switch on dash panel.[*]Put In "REVERSE" back up very slowly - THIS CAUSED A GRINDING SOUND FROM THE TRASFER CASE AREA![*]Put In "DRIVE" -Durango disengages from the 4x4 high back to 2x4 low.[/ol]
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK IT IS AND HOW DO I FIX IT????

RE: PLEASE HELP! 4 Wheel Hi Disengage Problems
You should be moving a slight bit forward when transfering 4X4 selections. Have you tried this.

02d4x4:

Sounds to me like your shift motor/solenoid on the transfer case is not working properly. Do you use 4x4 mode very often?.
I make it a habit of cycling my transfer case through all ranges at least once a month just to keep things freed up. You should be able to do this without moving.
Have you had the t case serviced properly which entails a fluid drain/refill every 30k?

Definately sounds like something is hanging up, and the grinding is not a good sign.
When I select 4 low, I do have to put my trans in neutral, othe than that I can shift into and out of 4 high ad nauseum while moving, stopped, and in gear without any problem.

You should be able to also.

Thanks Hydro.... That Worked... Your The Man!!!!
But what about what "N8ECH" said below.... He said the solinoid should activate , and switch the transfer case when the truck is at a stand still??? Is it suppose to switch in and out when at a stand still, or do I have to be rolling forward slightly like you said?

Also, One more thing.... What about what I said about the truck "Creeping" forward when I let off the break, and the truck is in neutral, and locked into 4x4 high... Is this normal for the truck to do that?

Thanks A LOT HYDRO!

Thanks "N8ech"!!! You bring up some excellent points.... I just got the truck and from the looks of it and the mileage and condition of the truck.... I don't think it was hardly ever in 4x4.... So you could be right about the solenoid.... however.... MY truck will not.... Not at all switch at a dead stand still...... A lot of people agree with what you said ... some even suggest tracking down the vacume for the solenoid and seeing if I have a leak...

I wanted to ask you.... Do you have a different year than my truck than mine???... I have a 2002 Durango SLT.... I am wondering if your maybe referencing a different model than mine... If you are speaking about my model, and your insisting that my Durango should switch while standing still, then I have some more work cut out for me chasing down the problem....

Thanks for the post N8ECH! Let me know if you have seen a 2002 Durango 4x4 SLT cycle through the 4x4 settings while standing still?????????

Glad to hear that Hydro's advice worked out for you. The owners manual for my 01 which is the same as your 02 (electric shift) says going from 2wd to 4 high or back, and AWD to 4 High or back for those of us with AWD can be done completely stopped, or in motion up to 55mph.

Hopefully your t case is ok, and just needs to be "exercised" a bit to loosen things up.
