Default 93 ES problems

HELLO ALL... here is the story..

93 3.5 ES.... got it, ran it a few hundred milesin the first few days, one day noticed a HESITATION at about 50 mph... would clear right up.. one instance of feeling like the gas peddle was stuck... nothing else strange...

5th day drove it about 200 miles one way to drop someone off... ran fine all the waythere, on the way back got into slow traffic, she stalled, noticed temp guage did a little JUMP just over the 1/2 mark but went back down... gas was low but not empty but it had that OUT OF GAS feeling so thought maybe gauge was wrong, it started right up in neutral and gas station was right there, coasted in got gas... continued on ...

an hr later went to pass someone (45 min on a one lane road guy was doing 30 in a 50 it was necessary!) As I passed she had NO go power, just felt dogged out.....

then at some point almost home stopped at a light, she stalled... started right up.... a little roughness once in a while while driving like sputter like dirty gas/carb feeling....

parked her... took her out a few times local over next week and it would stall at lights but start right up... so checked manual and looked on line...
REPLACED the I.A.C. as lots of folks said same symptoms and it did restart easy so tried that first.... took it out, same problem.... no passing power and stalling... drives good at regular load like slowly up to 50/60/70 etc but from slow if you give it gas to go fast, dogs out big time.

Let it sit a week had no time to ck her... friend came over told him problem took it for a ride and coming back motor starts knocking and clanking as if it was hot and it stalled as i pulled in and NO restart... I let it sit.... temp gauge never went over 1/2, no overflow of fluids etc, no trouble lights.... but totally acted as if overheating...

TOP of motor seemed to be RED HOT.... BUT lower radiator hose not really.... and NO FANS.... so when cool took out thermostat which looked new... left it out and ran car.... same thing... and no fan.... checked relays found a bad relay and swapped with AC relay as the AC does not work anyway.... appears both fan wires are spliced to each other as one is cut from battery terminal and taped to the other... with a swapped relay both fans came on .... but not sure yet if they come on by themselves when car up to temp or not cant run it that long would seem to get hot motor....

all hoses are new....owner before me had just done LOTS of work to car (he works on cars) for a girlfriend but things soured and he did not give her the car... appears new valve cover gaskets and total new tune parts/wires etc and looks may be new head gasket etc...

OK so checked coolant, cap, and replaced the TEMP SENSOR up near the thermostat housing... figuring if bad not doing its thing and that is why no overheat light or temp gauge going up or fans not coming on etc.... so after putting it in I started car and let run... it was tapping and making some knocking sounds...the motor seems to be red hot in minutes andthe upper rad hose gets warm and the passenger side radiator felt warm but the driver side nothing and I hearda little whine off and on from what seemed water pump so makes sense not pumping goodso I get water pump and put it in last night...

on the water pump was BLACK MARKS like belt was dragging.... so water pump may have been locking up.... and when I spun it after getting it out it had a rough spot and a squeak in it...

notice also the pass side timing mark off about 8 belt notches, realign all marks.... put back together add fluid, purge air etc...

starts right up but still hear knock andtapping....knock comes and goes and weak and strong... tapping seemed like left valve area at first then cleared then right side... back and forth... like no oil - BUT it wouldclear up... then come back... and yes, oillevel all good... (can it be thinned out too much due to a possible overheat?)

Did not road test as it was dark and did not want to break down at night...I got fans on and let it run 15-20 minutes the cooling system stayed nice and cool the top of motor did not get red hot(but also did not drive it under load) the hoses and all felt good / cool... before it was all hot in minutes....

give it gas and she runs crappy and the knocking worried me so I shut her down... did not check her today it rained and was too busy...

so I THINK the cooling system should be all good so now to find out why motor knocking/tapping...

my thoughts...

called corner shop to see if they had a scan tool - NONE and cannot drive it to the other shops, they are 25-30 miles at least each way... thinking of buying a scan tool, would come in handy as I have 3 1993's out here... I figure the scan tool I can get for almost 200 and reuse it.. I could spend more on that for a tow and a test at a shop... and maybe still not have answers because the car never gave a trouble light or anything... so wondering if a trouble code would show anyway...

I dont think it is MAJOR problem, not smoking, not dying (will sit idling running strong) no leaks or other issues... I think it is something stupid another sensor probably... but which one? I have a tech manual and they all seem to be so interrelated how can u tell geez.

IS IT POSSIBLE the temp sensor or IAC parts were wrong parts... the IAC looked a bit different than the old one BUT of course that is common, and the temp sensor had longer thread area so did not go all the way in but figure that is so it will fit more than one model car etc...

i already plan to PUT THE OLD IAC IN and see if any different since it did not have the HOT problem before I changed that... well, not that I know of... and just for fun will put a new thermostat in case it is sticking but I really dont think it is any of that at this point...]

What is possibility of a failing oil pump... ? How to know?

any ideas? does it sound like something a scan tool will diagnose or would I be wasting my money?

the car is clean, no dents etc nice interior decent miles and runs strong drivetrain otherwise so seems worth trying to keep... I have the manual and read plenty but still do not see an ANSWER staring right at me.... could be this could be that... cant just buy them all!

THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS TO GET ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION... celia
