'94 Dodge Intrepid (3.3) Timing Belt Broke: Engine Destroyed? $600 only way to know?
Engine stopped and towed to mechanic. He says only way to find out if engine destroyed is to pay $600, THEN we'll see the real cost. I only paid $500 for the car and it always felt like it was barely running anyway.
Should I pay $600 or junk it?
I've already paid $1.000 in registrations, fees, repairs, and gas for only 10 months of driving this beast.

You could always replace the timing belt yourself for about 30+ bucks. If the engine is destroyed anyway your only out 30 + time. If you pay this guy 600 and its destroyed then your out 600 plus any addition cost to repair.
If you replace the timing belt yourself and it's still junk you can sell it to a junk yard for about 150. so you would have about 750 to go toward another intrepid ( 93 -97)which usually runs about 1000.00.
good luck

I can't tell you what to do with your car. I just looked in the Haynes Manual #25025 page 2A-7 and 2A-8. This car has a timing chain and sprockets not belt.
I do not do much engine work myself. I have changed timing belts, chains and gears on older cars. This one looks to difficult for me to do in the back yard. You may have better facilities.
