Default draining torque converter

I recently got a deal on a 96 intrepid that badly needs the tranny fluid changed.. in fact it looks like someone put oil in it by mistake, So I want to get as close to all of it out as possible.
locally, I've been advised to drop the pan and filter, then do the same again a week later, but these are not professionals advising this.
So I've been reading up and the concensus on the internet seems to be that you can *******ly clear the converter be first doing the pan/filter/fluid job as usual, the disconnecting the transmission cooler line that pumps out of the trans and running the engine briefly (I see no indication that any gear change is advised) to pump whats in the pan through the converter and right out the trans line keeping a couple extra quarts to top it off as you go ( I assume in my case I would watch the color of the outgoing fluid to determine when its done).
Is this just some internet melarky or is this a legitimate way to really clean out the vast majority of old fluid? is there any chance of the old fluid coming back to the pan?
