Default 1996 Intrepid

My son's '96 Intrepid, 3.3 L will run for 15 mins or so then quit. Let it sit for a bit and it will fire up again and do the same thing.
I have changed the fuel filter, plugs and air filter just to start with.
Is there an over temp sensor that shuts it down? The alternator is on it's last leg. Very noisy and VERY hot. Could this be the problem over temp relay?) as it has never done this before. I don't know much (next to nothing) about the electronic stuff in these cars so any info will help.

Thanks

new engine computer. it controls the alternator. theres no over temp sensor.

but really, I would diagnose the problem. maybe you have a bad alternator, maybe there's a wiring problem. maybe the altenator isn't the issue but the problem is somewhere else like crank sensor, or cam sensor or who knows.

you need to use a systematic diagnosis process to eliminate systems that are not of cause. you could just unplug the alternator and see what happens. if car keeps running more than 15min, then the alt system is the problem... basically do some troubleshooting.
