Need help changing O2 sensor
What's going on everyone?
I need your help. I don't know much about cars. I know how to change my oil and small things like that, but when it comes to O2 sensors I have no idea. I just came from Midas and I got a scan which cost me $75 and they told me that my O2 sensor needed to be replaced. They were going to charge me $190 for parts and $45 for labor. That is tooooo much for pocket. So I decided to do it my self, that is where I need you help. Can somebody tell me how to do it (step by step) I would truly appreciate it. Thanks ahead of time.

Its amazing how these guys make this kind of cash just to plug in and get a code to tell us whats wrong huh?Ok to your question,, is your car a 3.3 or a 3.5?The reason i ask is because on a 3.3 there are 4 yes 4 o2 sensors.2 are on the exhaust manifold and 2 are after the catylic convertor.If you were to replace 2 i say replace all 4 .I got a price from autozone for 200.00 for all sensors.You`ll notice a spark plug type of plug connected to 2 wires that screws into the exhaust manifold on both sides and after the exhaust manifolds.Put a little wd40 or PB blaster and take a wrench and they should loosen.Unscrew the 4 and reinstall them and reconnect the plugs.I am about to do these to my 94 eagle vision cause i am tired of watchnig the damn check engine light come on and the car loses power when you try to accelerate then the computer overrides it and the C/E/L comes on...

As a thought, you might want to stay away from the O2 sensors that most outfits sell and stick with OEM (if you like wasting money) or go with Bosch.
My car's sensor was acting up, so I replaced it. It was OK for a few weeks, then started acting up again. Thinking it was something else, we (the shop and I) spent several hundred bucks tracking the problem. It turns out the O2 sensor worked, but not properly when the engine was warming up... and especially in the first 5 minutes. Both the shop and the dealership told me that's not too uncommon. Good guys at the shop... only charged $400 for about $700 worth of work, because they didn't check the O2 sensor at the start... they were also fooled.
Naturally, the parts store gave me the run around. Somehow the right manager was never in. After chasing a refund for 3 months, I finally gave up and tossed the old part. Schmunk's carries the same (defective) part as all the other stores, locally... unless you request Bosch.

Thank you very much guys, your info really does help. I don't want to sound ignorant, but is there any chance you can tell me what does the catylic convertor and the exhaust manifold looks like and where are they located? I know is a shame, but I really don't know. Also I was reading some where that you need to unplug the battery before you start changing the O2 sensor, is that true?
P.S- my intrepid is a 3.3

the exhaust manifolds are connected to the engine, look under your car and you`ll see the tublar pipes from both sides rund down under the car and you`ll see where their attached to.Those are your exhaust manifolds, the catylic convertor is connected to the round pipe under your car.It looks like a rectangular box and should have alot of small tiny holes all around it.Its wise to disconnect the battery so you dont short anything out in the electricial system.Truthfully if you look in any manuals(repair) the 1st thing they always tell you to do is disconnect the battery..

Im new to this section just bought an Trep but not new to O2 sensors. Like Ramsport said if you have 4 and have to do 2 do all 4. You shouldn't have to use any lub to get them off just run you engine for a few minutes and they should come loose. When you put in the new ones make sure you use some anti-seize on them just to make it easier next time. Go with OME ones or just do what I did get O2 simulators.
