Default Accelerator cable

Yesterday while getting on the expressway my accelerator stuck. I found the accelerator cable frayed and wouldn't go back into the housing (seems it's a molded housing with no clearance. I snipped off all of the frayed ends and put an extra spring on the cables to get them to return, just to get home. But.... even with the throttle completely closed the engine was revving like crazy. I started it, jammed it in drive, and drove all the way home idling at about 75 downhill and 40 MPH uphill. got hairy a few times but made it. The question is...even when I fix the cable I'll still be idling at about 6,000 RPM. any idea what might be causing this. I'm figuring a sensor of some sort?????
