Rear main oil seal..With no pre lube?
The manual says not to put any lube on the seal. Why would I run a engine with a dry seal?
For what reason does the seal have to be put in dry like that?
Old one took a dump and the clutch is slipping like mad. Will the oil affect the clutch after I fix it, can I put some kind of solvent on it, or will the oil dispate over time. The clutch can't be dissembled.
Thanks

My Haynes manual says not to lubricate the lip or outer diameter of the seal. I think they are referring to the metal outer portion of the seal that drives into the block. The inner sealing lip will obviously be lubed by the engine oil when running. As far as the clutch depending on how much oil is on it? It’s probably toast you may as well replace it while it’s apart. I would also check both the through-out/release bearing and pilot bearing.
I just put a little bit of motor oil on the inside ring when i put mine in. for the slippery clutch...when its all put back together, you MIGHT be able to hold the clutch pedal down with like, a rod or something, and take that little plastic thing off the top of the trans so you can see the clutch, and while the pedal is down, spray some brake cleaner on it, it dries pretty fast and remover any oils instantly...but dont do this yet until someone else thinks it would be ok. I'll ask one of the other mechanics at work tomorrow if you can do that.
when oil gets on the clutch disc it almost kinda burns the oil into the disc....causing a slick spot....which would then be junk
whenever i install a rear main seal i never put any lube on it at all.....never had any problems....and you dont wanna get any lube on the outside ring otherwise it might be able to splash on the new clutc hand cause the same problem you have now

Good stuff, thanks for the help.
Today I had to use to car to get to work. And the clutch was holding fine again??
But we well see when I tear into it, I'll take a camera this time.
