Default Engine Swap?

ok i just bought a 98 dodge neon sportwith a 129,000 miles on and it started to make a knocking clicking sound, i was told by a mechanic that the engine was gone so i want to replace it but i dont know what engines will fit it and also i want to convert it from manual to automatic due to me not knowing how to drive manual very well. Im looking to keep the car but i wanna do all this in the least expensive way. Can someone help me out please!!??

ok first u really dont want to switch from a manual.....they are sooooooo much faster........and u will learn how to drive it perfectly in like a few weeks, but when u start its gonna be a lil rough drivin around...i had the same problem....but now its as smooth as an auto....the engine in urs is a dohc ( dual over head cam) more powerful that the single over head cam version (sohc).....now if u went to a junkyard you could find a dohc for about 600....at least thats what they cost around here.....or u could do an srt-4 swap if u want alot more power but that will run u above 3k......

kool but yeah im not looking for faster right now, i will slowly transform it into a showcar starting with the exterior first but right now i just need a car to drive, so right now i want to convert it to an automatic but i just dont know how. And when i go look for an engine can i find anyone that is dohc or does it have to be a neon engine (trying to stay cheap right now lol)
