I have a 1998 dodge neon thatI bought used about 10 months ago from the city(was a meter maid car). Figured it would have been well maintained with only 90,000 miles. It ran fine for about 3 months then left me stranded at the mall. Had it towed home and the AAA driver was a Neon guy who had a high performance car that he raced and he told me it sounded like a fuel pump died. The car sat in about 3 feet of snow for about 3 1/2 months and once it started to warm up I thought what the heck, charged the battery and the thing started as soon as I hit the key. Drove it around the block a few times to charge the battery and stopped, let it sit turnde it off, started it again and so on for the evening. The next day got some fule system cleaner, put that in and started it again,drove it about 30 minutes and parked, stoped and then it wouldn't start. So for the past month it has been starting off and on. It will start and run then 2 hours later it wont start, come back 30 minutes later and it will start, on and on this cycle goes. Now today I was trying to drive around the neighborhood and it died while I was driving it, this is the first time this has happened, and it wouldn't start. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and it started but wouldn't rev over about 2000rpm and only would do this by pumping it and it would bog down if I pumped it to the floor. Have unclipped the fuel line up by the firewall before and fuel would run out when I turned the key. I did that today and nothing came out.
I don't know if this is a fuel pump problem, a fuel injector problem, a computer problem or what. I don't want to spend alot of money to fix a car that isn't worth a lot anyway. I don't want to patch it short term and sell it to someone and it leave them stranded either.
Anyone know what this might be? Any and all advice welcome. Thanks

 

the wont go over 2k rpms problem sounds like something is wrong with your mass air flow sensor.

if your engine cannot tell how much air that is coming into the engine, then it doesnt know how much gas to put into it, hence it wont go over 2k rpms

 

Sounds like you may have a fuel pump problem or maybe a bad fuel pump relay. Put agauge on the fuel rail and see what the pressure is (not sure but I think it's suppose to be 50psi). You can also try swapping the fuel pump relay with the horn relay.

 

Neons don't have a MAF sensor.

Check your fuel pump fuse and relay and if both are OK, then change your fuel pump.
