It appears that this color code is the same for both 1st and 2nd generation Neons at least up to 2003.
Apparently the Black with yellow stripe = light switch is not used on all years.
Note: fuse #'s shown are for 1st gen Neons.

Orange = interior lights
Pink = power hot at all times fuse # 13 (power dist center) (may be Pink/Light Blue on some2nd gen)
Black with yellow stripe = light switch
Red with white stripe = power from acc. fuse # 16 (fuse block)(may be yellow/red on some 2nd gen)
Black = Ground

Dark Green = + LF speaker
Brown with red stripe = - LF speaker

Violet = + RF speaker
Dark Blue with red stripe = - RF speaker

Brown with yellow stripe = + LR speaker
Brown with light blue stripe = - LR speaker

Dark Blue with orange stripe = - RR speaker
Dark Blue with white stripe = + RR speaker

I had the same problem. take the old speaker and touch 2 of the wires off the old speaker to the terminals of your battery. just pick either the green one as positive or negative when you touch it the speaker will move. if it jumps out then you got the right hook up if it sucks in then its backwards. i know that you already know which is positive and negative by now but this is a good tip you can use in the future.

i meant to actually take the speaker out and touch the leads off the speaker to a live battery and see which way the speaker moves. then you can tell if u hav the right polarity
