Dodge/Chrysler compatible CD player?
Is it true that I can install any Dodge/Chrysler CD player between 1990-2000 in my 98 DOHC Neon? I've heard i can use 2nd gens also with mods but I don't want to modify
Which of the Dodge/Chryslers CD player is the best out of all the different models and years?
I'm going to the local pick n pull

Jetfuel, first of all welcome, can't say i've seen you here before! To answer your question in short: yes.
Good luck at pick n pull. At the one closest to me, they yank all the radios out and have them at the front desk for people to buy there. as your guess would have it, and my wasted hour of driving, most get gobbled up the second they are put out.
Now to answer your compatability question. i wouldnt necessarily generalize it by years, as a few models may or may not have had a different radio. What you need to do is familiarize yourself first and foremost with the look of the unit itself. im assuming your 98 has the same square design as my 99 like this. it MUST also have one bracket on the left part of the bottom and on the top part of the right side, look at the picture to see what im talking about:

next, be sure the connectors are the same. They usually are, i just want you to have a comprehensive knowledge of this before you buy anything. They are elongated with the ends somewaht flipped up. see what im talking about from the pictures:

lastly, makes sure that the pinout matches yours. again, it will, but again i want you to be sure. have you removed your unit yet? write down the pinout and match it up with the one you are buying. what i mean by all this is in the picture:

Also, have you tried eBay? they have cd units on there all the time. be prepared to spend close to $100 (most auctions end above $50). and if you are particular enough, get one that looks good, dont settle for a crappy looking unit. i'll be on there in the next few days looking for a cd unit too, so we are in the same boat. I would just prefer to not go aftermarket (more difficult because i have premium sound), and i like the looks of the factory unit.
hope this answers your question!

Thanks for all the info, and the welcome. I'm very new here, first time Dodge buyer. I've always had Japanese cars and are now sick of them.
I got a great deal on a 98 DOHC Neon R/T and couldn't pass it up, I can't believe how fun these things are too drive and this forum kicks ***.
I haven't pulled it out yet, and I have checked eBay, I find them pretty expensive, espeically that most of them are sold AS IS. My pick n pull place is only a few minutes away so I guess I'll start there and if not I guess I'll go through eBay, just make sure we don't get in a bidding war

haa yeah ill try. my pick n pull sells factory cd players for $40 + tax, so some of the ebay ones arent horribly priced. oh and did you catch my last edit about the bracket locations? very important. id hate to see you pick on up only to fit on with just one bolt. that would suck. and congrats on the R/T. ive got a 99 myself and i absolutely love it. 'fun' is probably one of the best words to describe a neon

Yeah I saw the braket locations, thanks again. My P&P sells them at 30$CDN, no shipping so it's a major saving. I'll see if they have a couple of them, I could just sell you the other one w/o a markup.
yeah, im sure it was worth the look anyway. and if for some reason you do end up with a couple for cheap, ill be glad to purchase one from you if you are willing to sell it to me for the price you bought it + shipping, unless you want extra for your efforts. it all depends on the price anyways. but good luck in your search man.
