Default starting issues, might be easy

here's what I've got going on and hopefully someone has some advise!!
1998 neon sport
Car runs awesome, but when you start it, it will do a couple of things
one, it'll start right up
two, it'll turn over more than normaland then start
three, it'll turn over and then "zing" thats the best I can explain
Four, it'll "zing" right from the turn of the key

It'll do one of those or all of those, no ryme or reason, no pattern, no fricken clue!!
But, it will fire up eventually, usually after 3-4 attemps

all advise or ideas more than welcome
thanks

the teeth on the starter or flywhell might be a little worn or broken....that would give you the zinging sound from the starter gear slipping off the flywheel....just a thought

cool, I've been thinking starter alla long, but, I think its not engaging at all, if teeth were missing wouldn't it catch and grab soon after it missed the tooth, I'm thinking weak battery, loosing some charge when not running, short? I'm not sure why

Check you battery cables and the connection to the frame, battery, and of course over to the alternator and Starter. Should all be clean and tight.

Also check you battery and starter.
