Default camshaft position sensor problem

about 4 weeks ago my 99' neon sohc threw the CPS codei went to autozone to have it read and the guy earased it for me, about 2 weeks went by and still no code, all the sudded it came on and back to autozone i went. It was throwing the CPS code along with 3 cylinders were misfiring. i didnt fix anything yet, and yesterday my check engine light shut off by itself.
So my question is, do you guys think the sensor is bad, and thats whats causing the misfire, or is there a deeper problem. also is it normal for the light to just shut off on its own.
Any info on the sensor would be nice too, im a novice mechanic and would prefer to do it myself to save money. is it a long job?
I am moving from indiana to tennessee in sept. and am trying to makesure my car is roadworthy. Any preventative maintenance suggestions would be appreciated too?
Here's what ive done so far
83,000 miles
valve cover gasket
plugs and wires last summer
coolant flush
air filter/ pcv valve
new tires/brakes and rotors
trans flush with filter and pan gasket
would like to do shocks and struts but that a little too pricey for comfort!!

Anything you can add to the list, maybe o2 sensor.....ect

cps are good for going out on neons replace the sensor should fix your problem as far as the misfire code it could of set by the cps but that will most likely be in your ignition system like a plug ,plug wire(evn maybe an injector)the reason a cel will shut off by it self means that the problem is not present at the time, and will turn back on when the problem comes back or acts up,so replace the cps and clear the code and go from there

thanx winplet 1971, i went and picked up the sensor today on lunch. could the misfire be caused by still having the stock coil pack at 83,000mls.
Also, any other preventavibe maint. to help me make this thing road worthy?

Any comments are appreciated.

Did you get the "P" code for the misfire? That would help narrow down your problem. Get it scanned for free at Autozone, Napa or someplace like that.

my code was p0340 thats what it says on the autozone printout. but that only talks about the Camshaft position sensor, plugs and wires were re-done last summer, and coil pack is 83,000mls old if that helps.
