First question, what exactly does the crossover cable do? I'm about to go upstairs and do some reading. But thought I'd get responses here as well. And with there being two cables coming off of my Neon's MTx, what does the non-crossover cable do exactly?

Problem is: the Neon shifter in every gear wiggles like it's in Neutral. It's really annoying. I wasn't going to mess with it, but eventually it stopped wanting to go into Reverse, and eventually it wouldn't go into Reverse at all unless you put it in 5th first. So it was time to adjust the crossover cable. When I was working on the cable, something came up and I had to abandon the car for a couple weeks in the middle of the job. I came back today to work on the brakes and tightened up the X-over cable to pull the car into the garage, and now the shifter doesn't appear to have access to 5th gear or Reverse. Before, I could move it all the way to the right, but couldn't push it down into Reverse. And now, it goes all the way to the right and down very easily, but then the car goes forward like I'm trying to start in 4th. So I'm guessing that one of those cables is misadjusted now since I just screwed it back in.

So I need to know what exactly those cables do to visualize what I need to do as a solution. Upstairs I go to read manuals and such.
