think those two years are exactly the same if I recall correctly.

There's alittle problem with 95 to 96--speed sensor clip is a little different shape so either have to buy a new sensor, transfer from old tranny or do a little splicing.

all 95-99 neon transmissions are interchangable......(sohc or dohc doesnt matter either).....all difference is the speed sensor (as stated alredy)

The gear ratio may be different, if mileage is a concern. Speed sensor will be diffrent. Solder time!

Ok I have a 95 Transmission in my 98 now. Speed is dead on ***** at radar positions around the city.

Only thing I did was change my speed sensor. The 95 speed sensor is different but 96-99 are the same. Transmissions are identical inside.

My two 96 had the older style connector. Still not a big deal to solder/splice the three wires to make them work. I'd recommend using newer sensors, as some older sensors are no longer available.

The crank position sensor (CPS) on failed due to bad wiring. The sensor was discovered later to be fine. When purchasing a new cps, they had only a newer style connector. Just a heads up there. Most newer (2000+) dodge parts have the same connector for the ignition coil, cam sensor, velocity speed sensor, and crank position sensor.

Neon manual transmissions are going to be the same with the exception gearing. The baseline 1G 5speed has a 3.55 with .72FD and get the best mileage of all neon transmissions, where the r/t mtx has a 3.94 .81FD and gets the worst mileage. There are four mtx's in between.

all auto transmissions are the same gearing....
why does everyone always say the speed sensor clips need to be changed????
just swap the speed sensor out of your trans and put it in the new trans.....its only 1 bolt

yup--that's what I said. But I bought a new one because I was going to sell my '95 3.55 when I put in my '96 3.94. Buyer wanted the speed sensor (my '96 came with it's so I thought it was fair.)

...I have an extra '96 speed sensor laying around somewhere if someone wants it...LOL
