Has anyone ever used both the 3.94 and the 3.55????

all sohc have the 3.55FD with .72 5th gear...
all 95 dohc have 3.94FD with .72 5th gears
all acr's & rt's have 3.94FD with .81 5th gear

Taking that in mind, the main difference ( performance wise ) between a dohc and a dohc acr or r/t is the transmission. The suspension is also better with stiffer springs, and larger sway bars. Again, the dohc engine is the same, but the mtx is geared more aggressively. What does this mean? When you shift to 5th gears in most other cars, it does not pull much if at all, compared to 3rd gear or fourth gear. So what if you shifted to 5th gear, and it pulled like another 4th gear? That is what the r/t and acr mtx is like. It is like down shifting. The r/t and acr mtx accelerates (overall) 11% faster than all neon mtx's. It is ideally better for an n/a neon. I have ran many turbo cars on the top end because of this mtx. This can be used with a boosted car, but it is not a good idea especially when you start making power. Many turbo cars come factory with transmissions similar to the r/t trans, and those guys spend quite a few bucks ( in most cases) to get away from them when they start making power. They eat gas like nobodies business. Same goes for swapping to a 2.4L. The r/t trans is too much, and with all that torque you will eat tires and spin off the line like a big block V8 desperately looking for traction on a wet road (little analogy there). I have had a blast running my r/t trans, but now I am looking for more torque with better mileage, which I will find with a 2.4L block and a turbo PT mtx (3.29FD with .81 5th) which has the tallest gears from the factory. It also has a stronger trans case for higher torque number, so it is less likely to break.
BTW, yess I have used both, and the sohc benefits greatly with a 3.94FD .81 from the acr or r/t. Used a standard 3.94FD .72 from a regular dohc, and certainly helped with mileage, but not so snappy on the roads. Solution? Make more power and swap in a tall geared mtx to save on gas when you are not getting into it. The r/t or acr mtx cannot be turned off and crusing at 70mph puta you pretty close to 3600rpms in 5th. Not really a must when driving to work.

ghost neon summed it up pretty good, the 2.4 or a high power turbo car, your gonna want the 3.55 to be able to control the wheel spin
remember, with the 3.94, you'll shift through more gears to get to the same speed as the 3.55
what this means, is evey time you shift, you lose some time, just because time shifting is time not accerating, therefore, if you have the power, or torque for it, the taller gears are a better bet cause there will be less wheel spin, and you'll have the power to pull the gears equivilent to a car with less power pulling the 3.94
since a tranny swap isnt exactly something you want to do all the time, i suggest picking the ratio that suits what your goal for the car will be

I know i got a clear answer but I'm still confuesed... I hate this ratio ****.... I know alot about everything else... but trannys can bite my ***...

I'd go with a 3.55 from a 2G neon, as they have stronger internals parts and a larger trans case. Less likely to fail is what it all boils down two. Be sure to trans your trans fluid every 3 months or so depending on your driving styleespecially for you heavy footed drivers. This is an necessary as changing your oil. Or have fun swapping mtx's

You can only use up to an 01 neon unless you feel like swapping bellhousings also. 02 and up are hydraulic trannys.
