Engine removal
heyyy guys, well im takin out my dohc cuz the piston rod blew out, soooo im goin sohc, but dont be pissssed cuz imma throw in a r/t tranny within 3 months cuz i heard gearing is sweet in that tranny. but i got a question for yas.... does anyone got a cat converteri can buy cuz i need one bad and dont feel like payin 80$ for one, and how hard is it to seperate the tranny from the engine itself ? i got everything off juss 2 more bolts from the tranny to engine and its out but how hard to take out after i get those bolts out? any ideas? its a 5 speed....thanxxx guys!
the hanger type mount the transmission is bolted to - you need to tilt the engine and trans assembly while hoisting it to clear that hanger.
if ur neon is a 95 with the first vin digit is 1, or any year and the first vin digit is 3 - the trans comes right off the block after those bolts are removed. remember - there is a shaft coming out of the trans that goes into the clutch. you need to pull straight back till the shaft comes out and clears the clutch assembly.

hmmm... yea that hanger thing i seen i didnt unbolt it yet tho thats tommrows job, so once i get that off and seperate from the engine anything else i have to take off??? and will it come outa the top at all?
i always pull motor and motor/tranny combos from the top with no problems...
to make it easier, just unbolt the tranny mount from the car and tranny...then it will be easier to get out

pm me I'll tell you how I pulled the motor from the top and left transmission in.
I took intake off, starter off, torque converter bolts and every thing that attaches to the motor off. You hook the motor up on the dip stick bolt and on an exhaust bolt across from it it will give perfect balance when you lift it out. I set the starter and the wireing harness connectors on the transmission to hang there.
All you need to do is put a jack on the inpsection plate side of the transmission and have somebody with a big bar seperate the motor from the transmission as you jack the transmission up to tilt it,and yank it out with the cherry picker or hoist. Its actually pretty easy me and my Dad got it out on the first try in 5 minutes and got it on our second try putting it in. Its all about where you hook the chain to the motor to balance it to go in right.
When putting it in its easy to get the top left transmission bolt in while the motor and trans are at a slight angle then tighten it up but leave a quarter inch space between motor and transmission and then watch closly and it will pretty much line itself up perfect.
Its MUCH easier and faster to take the motor out without the transmission. My transmission held itself by its axels but I propped it up to take some weight off the axels. I want to slap anybody who says its easier to pull it with the transmission on (at least with an ATX), thats 2 hours worth of work if your lucky more.
