OK I get rough idle and at times lots of black smoke. Sometimes stalling. Was told the sensors are new so at a loss where to check.

How many miles on it? Dohc or sohc? Sounds like it could be a clogged exhaust problem, egr problem, or maybe a warn engine. Also check the fuel pressure. But usually black some is carbon build up. I think.

1996 SOHC with less than 140K on motor new exhaust system. takin git to a shop thurs for diag .. hope its not bad I have to drive it 400 miles friday .. 200 each way ... only vehicle i have. I am hoping it might be something in my pcm going bad as at times my ALT light is on but its charging fine also. im also gonna try the local salvage yard for those last check at least 9 Neons with the PCM still in it.

My car had a rough idle, stalled every time i let off the gas, exhaust smelt a bit, and my speedo didn't work. I found out my speed sensor plug wasn't on all the way. Fixed everything! Check the egr and speed sensor plug to make sure they are on tight and didn't get locked before getting pushed on.

ok quick question probably asked before .. is there any difference in the PCM between ATX and MTX or are they interchangeable? I found 1 for 5 speed but like 9 for ATX with same plug setup as mine.

You will need one from a 96 year car for it to be plud and play. Dohc or sohc will work but DOHC will give you more gas. If you use the auto ecu on the car I dont think it will start because of the clutch sensor? Maybe. And the rev limiter will be lower, along with check engines lights for the torque converter. I have 3 1996 sohc mtx ecus. If you need one let me know.
