Default 1997 neon transmission problem?

Hey im new to the forums and would love to ask a couple questions regarding a car I might be choosing to be my first.

I obviously found a 1997 neon and when me and my dad went to take a look at it, we found out there was a problem. The transmission will not shift into any gear besides the gear it is in now (park). When you get the shifter to show its in reverse, it makes a wierd noise like something is loose and clearly spinning. Though it shows it is in a gear, it will never lock into a gear. The car runs just that is wrong with it.

Any ideas on what it could possible be? Any unasked questions can be asked if needed.

Thanks alot in advance.

The transmission will not go into drive its stuck in park. If i can get a 97 neon, for a $1000 bucks ill probs take it if i just have to do like $750 worth of work with my dad.
