Clutch Question
Swaping from dohc to shoc. Planning to change computer and wiring. My question is about the clutch. The dohc eng I removed from my car has a modular type clutch pac. Flywheel, clutch disc, & pressure plate are all one unit. The sohc replacement engine I bought has what I would call a conventional clutch set-up. It has the three seperate componets (flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate). After checking the price for each system and finding the modular design is more than double the cost of a conventional clutch system, I will use the conventional system if they are interchangable. My question is, "are they interchangable"???
From my experiences, I would stay with what is in the car originally. I swapped my motor and swapped to the conventional because that's what was on the new engine. Well, i put it back together and had no clutch. So I took it apart, had the clutch looked at and it was determined that it was good so it wasn't a faulty clutch. I swapped the flywheel, put the modular clutch back on (what was original matched with with my engine and trans) and everything worked fine.
I'm sure people have had luck doing the swap, but I wont attempt it again. It was much more of a hassle than it was worth.

i have swapped the 2 clutches many time without major problems....though for the easy of installation, i would always go with a modular setup...not to mention that you dont need the clutch disk alignment tool
Yeah. After trying to install a conventional clutch, and then trying to install the modular clutch, I will definitely make sure that I always use the modular clutch. It was SOOO much easier installing the modular than the conventional.
Spud have you gone conventional to modular or modular to conventional? I went modular to conventional, and that is what gave me problems.

most of the times i do the conventional to modular swap but ive done the modular to conventional twice so far....without any problems even though i eyeballed the clutch disk aligment with the pressure plate
