Hello. 95 Neon starter that started a couple times by tapping....but now is unresponsive. Is it that it just needs the starter replaced completely or is there anything else I can check? It's my son's car and he doesn't know about cars...so I'm trying to help a little before I just buy the starter...

Any input appreciated!

 

It sounds like the starter is bad.
Usually the solenoid is what goes bad on the starters. The solenoid is mounted on the starter itself. However, rarely are those sold separately anymore.

 

If it needs assistance to start, that was an indicator it was going bad. It is replaced as a whole unit.
