Thinking of purchasing 95' Dodge Neon... need input.
This car has everything I want. The only problem is... it's not driveable. The seller of the vehicle is asking for $999.00 or best offer. Because of it's extensive problems, I was going to start at offering $500, and go no higher than $700, but, I'm already getting ahead of myself here. Here is the description of the cars problems in the owners own words. It is the entire thing:
"Description: Up for Sale is a 1995 Dodge Neon Highline for Parts or to be repaired. The body is in relatively good condition with little or no rust. Has minor scrapes and scratches, but has never been in an accident. New Tires were installed a year ago.
Mechanically, the car is in poor condition. It needs major engine work, and the front end shakes a bit. A head gasket was replaced a year ago, but did not last. The engine still runs, but oil leaks all over, I suspect a cracked engine block from all the overheating. The engine knocks badly possibly from a bad rod or bearing. Anyway, keep in mind if you are interested in this car, it will need an engine, and some front end work. The car has a good body and the transmission is in good condition. Also, it has new tires, nice alloy rims and the interior is still in good condition. It also features a nice sunroof. It is also currently licensed. This is a project car.
The car is being sold "AS-IS" for parts or to be repaired. No warranty, no guarantees. I just want to get it out of my driveway.
The car is for local pickup only. Bring a tow dolly if you want it. It is NOT driveable. "
I'm wondering many things. I'm going to check out the car physically tomorrow with a mechanic. I figure if I don't have to pay over $2,500 in repairs, it would be worth it. (I figure this due to the fact car dealerships sell 95's for $3,000.)The picture of it looks great (I uploaded it to this post). It has a CD player, sunroof... for a 17 year old, it's my dream car, really. I'm wondering if the oil leaking all over, maybe caused by a cracked engine block (although for my money's sake, I hope not) could be welded if the crack was found? I know it's obvious the head gasket needs to be replaced. I don't know much about Neons or any cars in general. The only thing I really know how to do with the 93' plymouth voyager I drive now is add windshield washer fluid and change the oil. Any input would be greatly appreciated... I really need some help here. I want this car so badly. I'm also wondering if the owner knows anything really about the problems as well, due to the fact he just wants it out of his driveway, I wonder if he even knows what he's talking about. I guess I'll find out.

that neon is totally ****ed. i wouldnt pay more than 400 for it. The engine is beyond repair, and any expensive means of fixing it would be more expensive than just getting a whole different engine and swapping them. When you go to buy it, just think about this, if you dont buy it, this guy has to pay a junk yard to get rid of it. So lowball the **** out of him because i dont see a whole lot of people looking for messed up neons.
I paid 500 for DOHC sportcoupe neon w/ 100000 mi and it ran and had no dings. The mexican just thought it was crap cuz the gauges kept goin all around and overheating. Not too hard to find one that for 1200 or less.
