Default Tire size and gas mileage question

Right now I get between 30 and 35 city/highway with my neon. I bought it with 185/75/14s on it. I will be getting tires sometime this summer and was wondering if anyone has had any experience going up a tire size (will 195/75/14s fit??). If so, did you see any difference in the mileage as far as highway? I would think there would be an increase, but was wondering if 195s fit ok or if it was a bit too tight.

Well sometime next school year I will be transferring schools. The drive is 360 miles round trip. So even 1mpg more with a bigger tire size (which is probably on the low side considering the mph on the way) would make a considerable difference. But I wanted to make sure they would clear fine.

hey rideordie

when the car was fitted with the original 185/75/14 the car's handling was really bad, the brakes were not as good as they can be, the rear end used to slide a lot, and it kinda wobbled when u do a fast right left maneuver, however, after fitting 195/65/14 the handling characteristics improved dramatically, its neutral steer with a much better grip, the car is firmer and tighter on corners, and no problems in that department for the last 10 years, i still manage 38 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined "little traffic jam" .
however, choosing the right compound is vital, we tried an expensive fulda "thats german" which costs nearly 70$ per tire, and it was rubbish, we r currently using yokohama "japanese" and to be honest its the best so far.

The circumference of the tire is a key factor. If you alter this dimension, you will throw off the odometer/speedometer which will affect MPG

guys, according to the service manual , the original tire was 185/70/14 , the 70 is the height to width ratio, so
70% of 185 = 129.5 "in mm"

the ones is propose are 195/65/14
65% of 195 = 126.5 "in mm"

this will account to 1 mile variation on the speedo, so i guess it will be fine

The difference is .68" in circumference.

In one mile the difference will be 7.5 revolutions which equates to 0.8% or 47 feet per mile difference. Less than 1mph variation
