rpm question?

OK so this might be a dumb question but i just bought a '98 sohc neon. 5 speed. What i am wondering is about what rpm should it be turning at 55 mph? Seems like it is really working hard at highway speed.

If everything is stock including the tires about 2200-2500 RPM depending on which transmission you have.

thank you. i was slightly concerned that it was running a little hard. i figured it had to be ok but was just wondering. every neon i had ever driven has been auto.
