Default 96 Neon battery dead

Hi everyone im new here,

heres my situation, for some reason my battery isnt holding a charge and has died, my batter light came on about 2 months ago and i took it to kraigen auto and they said my alternator was perfect, so i had a friend look at it, he told me the battery cables (that clamp to the posts) were corroded so he cleaned them for me.

since then the car was driving fine, battery recharged and no problems what so ever, then about a month ago the same thing happened, so i looked online on how to clean the terminals and the cables and did the baking soda / water paste + toothbrush as instructed and it worked after about a half hour of cleaning.

well then this morning. i went out to drive to the store and my car wouldnt even turn over, i tried the baking soda paste again and still nothing, i tried to jump start the car with my girlfriends car and nothing happened.

so i took off the battery cables again and made sure they were clean hooked them back up and tried doing the jump start again which finally worked, i drove the car for a few minutes and the battery light came back on i tried going on the freeway thinking the extra engine power would help charge the battery but all that would happen is my gauges would dip up and down as though the battery was dieing completely.

i know this is getting long and i apologize all im asking is what does this sound like to you guys and should i replace my battery cables / connectors and replace my battery for that matter ?

thanks in advance
John

Yes, and while you are at it, check your main frame grounding points under the hood (there are two grounding straps one on the passenger side firewall and one usually under the battery box connected to the tranny mount point).

with your gauges dipping, i would assume your alternator. You can test the battery, it should read 12.6v if its good. Start and run the car, it should read 14v or so if the alternator is working.

You can also check out your alternator, located at the bottom passenger side, towards the firewall. The connections there can get corroded fairly easily.
