changing rear brake shoes, Help
I need to replace my rear shoes on my '97 neon. Is there any How To video links or diagrams out there? I tried searching but was unsucsessful. Help plz!
Drums aren't that hard to do really. You just need to make sure you remember how you take them apart and reverse it. There are only three springs, two clips, and a couple pins. Its really easy, just more annoying than anything.
Start by taking out the two pins that hold the shoes to the metal peice, then take off the long spring along the top of the shoes. After that it all comes off. When you get it all back together, make sure you adjust the star to where there is some resistance on the drums, but not a whole lot. If you compress the cylinder then make sure you pump the brakes.
If you don't have the factory manual, the Haynes manual for the 1st gen's is very descriptive (step by step) and the Haynes are dirt cheap.
Just remember to keep one side intact as reference, the springs (return and hold downs) have a mind of their own - be careful.
Make sure the parking and service brake both feel right before driving.

Well i found a manual online for download. Started out fine, got it all apart, got it about halfway together and it started to downpour lol. But now its all together and seems to be fine. Thanks for the input guys much appreciated. Now to find that damn exhaust leak hehe.
No problem, do you have an idea where the leak might be? If you know where its at you can try that exhaust tape, its a good temporary fix that will last a while. You can always just go to an exhaust shop and have them make you an exhaust too.
