Default transmission swap

I have a 1998 DOHC that we race on oval asphalt short track. We have to keep things stock but I'm hitting the rev limiter too early. I want to swap the manual transmission for a higher gear. I heard the 2001 & 2002 non R/T was the way to go. Can you tell me if this is accurate and if so what is involved in the swap.

The 2nd gen magnum transmissions are very similar to the 1st gen R/T and ACR transmissions. The gear ratios are slightly different but both have a final gear of 3.94. The 2nd gens also have a hydraulic clutch whereas your 98 has a cable clutch. So if you wanted to use the 01-03 tranny, you would have to swap out the bellhousing as well.

Thanks for the link. I will give that a good review later.
Over the winter we made the swap from ATX to MTX but now I'm finding that I should have researched the gear ratios more before doing this. I'm pretty sure what we have in there now is from a 97 or 98. So are you saying that the magnum transmission from 2001-2002 Excluding R/T would be the better transmission for performance. I thought we would need to change the bellhousing since I was going from cable to hydraulic. I'm just not certain that the higher gear is going to be worth all of this. Any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas is very much appreciated.

The magnum engine is what came in the 2nd gen RTs. I am not saying it would be better for performance. What you need to do is find out if you have a transmission with a 3.55 final drive or 3.94. The 3.94 is much better for acceleration on stock engines. Here is a link that will provide you with the part number you will need to identify the transmission.

Your rev limiter should be at 7250 rpm if you are using a DOHC manual PCM.
