Default Gas Gauge and speedometer was stuck

1999 Dodge Neon, automatic.
Today when I left town, I had about 1/4 tank of gas left in the car. About an hour later, I'm heading back into town (a few miles out), I happened to notice that my gas gauge read empty (I knew it wasn't), and my speedometer read 0. I stopped at a convenience store, and put in $10 worth of gas, which brought the needle to the left of 3/4, and both were working fine. This has never happened before. The last time I filled it up, it seemed to take quite a while for the needle to leave the F, and head down the dial.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this before. Thanks.

Its a loose conection in the pig tails behind the cluster next time it happens push the top of the cluster in if that doesnt work try pushing in diffrent spots then tighten the screw closest to where u pushed and it should fix the problem. It maybe hillbilly enginuity but its better then paying 350.00 for a new cluster with tighter pins.

You may also be having the infamous cold solder problem that haunts 1st gen neon owners.

There is an entire link devoted to this issue. And the fix is easy (but does not always work). You simply reflow the pins on the back side of the IC circuit board.
