Default Cat removal - MPG gain?

I was wondering if anyone here has removed their catalytic convertor completely, and noticed any gain in mpg? On my DOHC, the CEL comes on and shows number 72 if I get heavy in the foot, whereas if I drive it like a sane man it doesn't come on.
I live in a province in Canada which doesn't have clean air laws yet, and if I removed the cat and the laws came in later, the replacement isn't too expensive to replace. And I already have a way to bypass the downstream O2 so the light doesn't come on.
Anyone have anything to say about this?

I haven't personally removed the cat, but do know people who have done it. The factory cat is pretty non-restrictive and doesn't hurt performance. People that I have spoken with have seen no legit MPG improvement.
