Default blown 96 neon

yesterday after i got off work i i was zipping along our litle bypass at a steady 95 with no probs went to get my check cashed and fill up on petro and on my way home i developed a god awful kmnockin in my 2.0 sohc so im been on the search for a another and i currently have a canidate im goin to look at in the morning i was wondering what are my biggest problems i need to check for when i inspect the motor also if there is iany differences in the motors between the sohc crankshafts with the sutos or manual trannys i now alot of the olds and pontiacs ive built dont have the back of the crank machined to accept the mtx pilot bearings i was wondering if the neons might be the same way as im new to the whole neon thing since i purchesed it as a economical car to drive around but the lack of power[:@] has me almost wanting to get rid of it any and all help is greatly appreciated

Things to check for on a used motor? Timing belt condition, updated head gasket, turns freely.

There are no differences betseen the SOHC and DOHC crankshafts (although the pistons are different), and no differences between ATX and MTX crankshafts.

appreciate the help im goin to assume the swap will be pretty much a straight forward r&r hopefully theres no special tricks to changingout the motor

Should be a straight swap if you have the same motor.

word appreciate it casper i started pullin the bitch out last night around 4 and it seems almost as straight forward as the numerrous V8 swaps ive done now only if my 300zx would be this simple
