Default 98 neon Fuel pump question

Most of the time when I turn the key just enough to power my fuel pump but not the starter I can hear a healthy fuel pump, but sometimes it's more like a rumble...

Is is dying?
Do these cars have a fuel filter somewheres?

Default RE: 98 neon Fuel pump question

There is a fuel filter attached to the regulator (on the pump housing), but it's designed to last the life of the car and then some. Only the cars with metal tanks (95's and some 96's) had an external fuel filter.

I've never heard a rumble from a fuel pump... I'd check fuel pressure when you first get power to it and see if it's coming right up. Make sure operating pressure is in as well. Might be worth it to get a spare pump standing by just in case. I've had a spare pump in my trunk for the last 40,000 miles or so... Cheapest place is Howell Automotive, they sell the Walbro 255 lph pump (and install kit) for $110 or so. Sometimes you'll find it other places, even ebay, for about the same price. Dealer or Autozone will charge probably twice that much.

Best of luck!
