Default interchangeability. 95 97

I got a hold of a 97 neon, with a 5 speed, will the tranny bolt right up to my 95 neon (automatice) without any hassle?

What things should I consider, will axles be different? Is it hard to drop out the trannies in either one?

Thanks for any input, sean

Dropping the trannies isn't too bad. Last time I did mine it was in and out in about 3 hours, but that's with 2 people, a hoist and some previous practice (it was the third time taking it out that weekend). Budget a weekend and you should manage. Yes, the axles are different, and of course you'll also need the shifter, cables, clutch pedal and cables and all the associated brackets. Not sure about any potential computer issues. As long as you've got everything though it will defineately bolt up, we've put a '95 MTX in a '00 model with no problems.

'cuz it's just so much fun of course.

Seriously, it sucked but he end result was worth it, I'd been babying a synchro-less tranny for a year. I had to take it back out the first time because the clutch fork retainer clip came off, tried for a long time to get it back on with a long screwdriver through the clutch cable hole but no dice. Put it back in and this time the clutch cable caught on the brake booster and did not self adjust, the slack in the cable allowed the throwout bearing to come out of the clutch fork. To top that all off once I did get it in and working we discovered that the case had a small crack in it, so I have to keep a close eye on the fluid as it seeps a bit from this crack. The crack is near the left side tranny mount and closer inspection showed that my old trranny was also seeping a bit from this area. In six months of driving since the swap I might have gone through maybe 1/4 quart of fluid. I'm really looking forward to yanking that trans again over the winter to swap in a different case. The good case I have is a 3.55 trans so I've got to swap the internals, should be fun and educational.

Glad you like your manual, ain't it a blast? I've never done the ATX to MTX swap, how'd it go with the cables and such?

The cables went remarkably smooth. Putting in the pedals proved to be the second biggest challenge, just finiky(sp) work in an awkward position lol. Shift cables went in nice, the only trouble was with the clutch cable.

It went in nice throught the fire wall, I hooked it up to the clutch pedal then tryed going to the clutch fork, but that didn't want to work for some reason...After some thought I oiled that spring on the clutch cable not knowing what it was and turns out its, its own self adjuster or whatever, and it was seized a bit and that fixed everything up.

Im not sure what trans I managed to snag. At 100 clicks, its spinning about 21-2200 rpm in 5th. Maybe someone could analyse that haha. Becuase I heard theres two different ones and one is geared for quickness and the other economy.

Glad it went well, we'd like to pick up another neon someday and the autos are so plentiful that we might wind up doing the swap. As for your transmission I'd guess it's a 3.55 unit, my 3.94 spins about 2500 at 100km/h. Then again the neon tach and speedo aren't exactly known for their accuracy so your best bet is to pull the part number, either off the sticker on the front of the gear case or the metal tag on the end of the tranny, and compare it to this chart: http://www.neons.org/forumdodge/trans.htm
