Need Help With 96 SOHC
Ok, my girlfriends car is acting really wierd. She has a 1996 Neon Sedan with a SOHC engone. Normally i can figure it out, but i cant this time, even though im going to school for this stuff. Anyways Im sorry if this is a repost
She will have a loss of acceleration sometimes, but its not all under the same conditions. Example, last weekend she was driving home and went to push on the accelerator and nothing happened. Car was still running, but she had not throttle response. She pulled off the road and into a parking lot and as soon as she stopped, she shut the car off. Then she turn the car back on, put it into reverse, and the car started to shake and just shut off. Did it again and this time she didnt even put it into a gear, as soon as she started it, it shut off. She had it towed to a shop and they hooked a scan tool up to it. They said that the only codes that came up were an O2 sensor code, which i already know that is bad. Then a couple fuel codes came up, i cant remember exactly what they were, but those are the only codes. The only problem was when they went to test it out, they couldnt get ti to act up at all so its an intermittent problem.
I have an idea that it could be a bad fuel filter, and/or fuel pump. Im hopeing that its not the transmission, but you never know. Could it possibly be the injector?
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Dude, clear that megapost and just link to https://dodgeforum.com/m_63384/tm.htm
They switched fuel setups in the middle of the '96 model year. Went from a metal tank and external bigass fuel filter (change every 30k miles) to a plastic tank with a lifetime filter attached to the regulator. If you have the metal tank, the filter is easy and cheap enough to replace (located forward of the rear passenger tire, there's a cover plate you have to remove to get to it). There was a guy here (or one of the other boards I frequent) that had the same problems - wouldn't start or ran very rough, lots of fuel related codes. Changed the fuel filter and it all went away... Not saying that's guaranteed to be your problem, but it's a good first plan of attack. If you have the plastic tank though, replacing the little filter on the regulator probably won't help.
If you know the O2 sensor is bad, go ahead and replace it. It's just going to complicate other problems. Avoid Bosch brand sensors if you can, they don't work as well. NGK is better (OEM replacement) and only costs a few dollars more.
Tranny (auto, I'm assuming) could be a possibility, but it's always better to fix what you know is wrong before spending money on guesses. Injectors have their own set of codes.
Best of luck!
A list of the codes would probably help. If it ends up being the fuel pump, don't pay $400 or whatever they charge now for an OEM replacement. The Walbro 255 lph pump at Modern Performance or Howell Automotive only runs $110 or so.
