CUSTOM TURBO FOR 95 SOHC
i've been looking around and found that good used turbos from a older dodge such as the daytona or shadow. and it seems like a good cheaper way of turboing up my 95 sohc. i have an idea of what i'd be getting into by doing this. i know i'll need a turbo manifold, which could be custom made very easy. so my question is has anyone every done or tried this? if so how did it turn out? the only real question-question about how to do it, is with the oil lines.
You can get manifold flanges off ebay for under $50, and add your own piping and flange for the turbo (from the donor car) pretty cheap. The turbo III setup is what you'd want to look for. I don't recall which turbo was used (pretty sure it was a Garret), but it made 225ish HP on the 2.2L, so it would be a reasonable choice. Also found on the Spirit R/T. You could also go with a used T3/T4 hybrid, pretty cheap and much easier to find. As for oil lines, search through the archives at ********** Be sure to do a LOT of searching before you ask questions, the guys there can be pretty vicious... The DIY turbo setups have been done, some for under $1k including an intercooler (highly recommended). Not a bad way to go if you know what you are doing. If this is you first turbo install, I'd still recommend going with one of the bolt-on kits from Hahn or Chill Factory, or at the very least picking up a copy of Corky Bell's book "Maximum Boost".
Best of luck!

I have no personal experience, but I have heard from many people that the older turbos will and do work great, however, for what it take to install between work and effort its not worth using a TII turbo. Its gonna be a very custom job and cutom fabrication is expensive. The chillfactory is a proven turbo kit on the neon and with intercoooler is $3700, thats the top end of kits. You can get the Hanhs racecraft without intercooler for around $2200, cheaper if you buy it off ebay and they are both complete kits and the hahns will give you the same power and the Chillfactor W/ intercooler will give you 100hp increase on a stock motor(rough estimate, considering no one has actually run it with a dead stock moter).
Hey man i you think just like me! I thought about doing the same thing, its a easy thing to do. The project would take maybe be a lil wile but it wood be a great 1st time experience type a deal tho so i say go for it and if u ever get it done post some pictures of the engine and maybe take some pics during the operation to show the hole forum!
Good luck man have fun!

Even the CF turbo setup is going to top out at 225-235 ft-lbs torque, that's all the stock rods can handle...
I wouldn't recommend a DIY turbo setup as a 1st time experience. There's just so many little things that most people don't take into consideration (like $20 each a/n fittings), even after researching the heck out of it. You'd be much better off picking up a used complete kit from someone or just shelling out the bucks for a new one and get your feet wet that way. Then when the engine goes, or you're ready for a new project, you'll have a much better idea of what works and what you'd want to improve.
