Default speed sensor issues

i really need help with this....over a year ago my speedometer and odometer stopped working...few months later SES light came on and was for the vehicle speed sensor. What happened was my speed sensor gear -inside the transmission- was missing. My neon is a 1999, manual tranny and doesnt have cruise control. I had replaced speed sensor before and found a new gear that goes down in the transmission. Afterthat my speedometer was working but odometer still not working so i just said oh well. Bought a new cluster gauge and odometer still didnt work. Said oh well again and didnt worry about it cuz SES light was gone, and this has been almost a year ago and i havent touched it since....about a week ago my odometer started working but the little odometer with the reset button was trying to go backwards then as i got farther down the road it started moving forward and odometer also started running forward. And this was random, i did nothing to it. Occasionally it would work correctly and occasionally would stop working and try to go backwards again. Well this morning on my way to work my SES light came back on and i plugged in my handy-dandy OBD reader and it pulled up code P0500 - vehicle speed sensor A and for some reason was showing this same code twice in the OBD. My speedometer and odometer both quit working a day before the code pulled up in the system. Later today im going to pull out the speed sensor and make sure the gear is still attached to it correctly and make sure the sensor is clean. Besides that what else could be the problem? Anyone know anything please let me know. These clusters are not cable operated either. Occasionally my cluster will freeze up too then just quit working then itll start working when i hit a bump then will quit again. Please any advise on this is greatly appreciated!

I'm having the same problem as well as an idling issue. What I'm doing is replacing the throttle body and checking the sensor wire connectors to see for any corrosion. Maybe we can help eachother?
