Rad cap blew off?

Rad cap blew off?
I was doing a quick sprint with my buddy and his sunfire one night, and at the end of the race I stopped and my car was smoking like mad. The highest I revved it was 6100-6200, and doesnt it redline at like 6700 or limit there.
Anyways, popped the hood and coolant was spewing everywhere, I noticed the rad cap was loose, so I tightened it and it stopped. CRazy I thought. Does the cap pop off if there too much pressure in the system or what? Do you think im pushing this little car too hard, I rarely rev this thing past 5 grand, im pretty easy on it, so I dont think the odd, to-the-floor moves I pull would do anything would they?
