Default fuel pump

alright well i'm thinking i just a need a new fuel pump all together, but i thought i'd put up a post seeing if anyone thought any diff. i was sitting in my girlfriends driveway today and it just dies(the car). so i figured i ran out of gas. since my gas gauge gets alittle funny sometimes and doesn't like to tell me if i have gas. so i got some more gas and put in, but when i turned the key to let the fuel pump suck up the gas so it'd start nicely. i didn't hear it. i checked the fuse and it was alright. so what do you guys think?

The ASD relay energizes for about a second when you turn the key to "On", and the fuel pump typically whirs as it repressurizes the system. If the system is still pressurized, you may not hear the whirring at all...

Other things to check... There's the fuel pump relay and the ASD relay in the box behind the battery. If either of those is no good, no start... You can pull them and swap out with the horn relay, then honk the horn. Horn works, relay works. If the car is a 1995 or early 1996 with the metal gas tank, then there's a big external filter forward of the rear passenger tire (under a metal cover) that is supposed to be replaced every 30k miles. If it gets clogged, the pump will airbind and the car will not start. If you don't have the big filter, the tiny one attached to the regulator isn't going to do the same thing, it never gets replaced, so don't sweat it... Finally, you can check voltage at the wires going to the pump to make sure nothing is shorted out (make sure there's no spilled gas around...). Replacing the pump is really a last resort. If it does come to that though, don't go to the dealer or the parts store, you'll pay $300+ if you're lucky. Howell Automotive and Modern Performance sell the Walbro 255 lph pump that is a direct replacement (no modification needed) for $110 or so. If I ever find the how-to on fixing the fuel level sender, I'll post that up as well... Mine's been shot for the last 150k miles or so

Best of luck!

alright, well went through everything and it turned out to be the fuel pump. i took your advice and got the walbro fuel pump but i got it off ebay its the exact same one from modern, it just comes with everything. and it was a bit cheaper it came to 106 all together. deff better then the ones from autozone or advance, with it pumping 255lph is that going to be a problem or any stress on the rest of my fuel system?

Short of any weak lines or connections, which you should not have with 300,000 miles on an average car, NO. Its not gonna do anything for performance either though

alright thats good to hear, yeah i don't really care about the performance part of it it was just a whole lot cheaper then buying one from autozone or another part store. and it was an easy choice go with the cheaper better one or the cheap-o (more expensive) from an auto store. thanks for all the help.

255 lph is just the maximum capacity. The regulator is going to maintain the same 49 psi at the rail it always has... Your fuel system will never know the difference...
