Default Throwing Codes

My neon's SES light is going on and off (goes on almost every time I drive and stays on for a while, will turn off for a while, on for a while ...) and I checked my code and it was for my O2 sensor, bank 1 sensor 2. Now I just bought this car not long ago as my winter driver and am not too familiar with the system set-ups of the neons. If it is sensor 2, then it is after the cat and does not matter if it malfunctions, correct? I am just using my knowledge from my Trans Am where the first O2s measure and adjust your air/fuel ratio and are therefore essential, while the second O2s just measure to see if your cats are working and do not effect performance of your engine. Is this true with the neons as well???[sm=confused06.gif] I would rather not put any money into this car than I need to. Thanks for the advice guys!

thanks for the input. anyone else here have any idea of the function of the second 02 sensor (bank 1 sensor 2 to be exact). I am really hoping that it has no effect on engine performance so that I dont have to replace it [sm=smiley2.gif]

Starting in '96, the downstream sensor on the Neon does provide input for long-term and short-term fuel trims. It certainly won't affect as much as the upstream, but it's in the programming. A faulty d/s sensor may force a limp-home mode, but I'm not positive on that.

Best of luck!
