Default improper tach reading

i have a 99 neon that my wife just bought, the rpm read 4000 at idle and abot 2 when engineis off it sounds like the rpms are between 1200 and 1500 at idle.

Anouther problem is that it seems like it shifts late into third like passing gear linkage problem.

I would replace the cluster to fix the tach problem. You can pick one up from the junkyard for pretty cheap and its only about 6 screws or so to take the cluster out. You unscrew the 4 screws holding it in and it just pulls out, pop the new one in and snap the dash back together. When was the last time the transmission was serviced? If its been a while or you don't know, I would do a flush, filter, fill and adjust the bands. How many miles are on the car and do you know how hard its been driven?

Default RE: improper tach reading

my wife just got the car so I dont have any history on it.
It has 109k and the trans fluid looks and smells relitivly new. It dosn't appear to have any leaks. It was cleaned real well so it will be alittle while before Ill know for sure. Im going to visually check again aswell as the passing gear links and shifter linkage for any problem. I also checked the codes and just got the 55 code so I guess thats pretty good. Thanks for responding I need all the help I can get.
