Default My 98 Neon oil leak story.........

Hello all. Thought I'd share my oil leak story. I had a bad oil leak around the center of the motor in the back. I thought it might be the oil sending unit so I had it replaced at a Goodyear service center. Still leaked. Took it back and they ran it on a lift for an hour and didn't see a leak. They didn't load the motor down is why I believe they didn't see it leak. they concluded it was the head gasket leaking and said it would cost $1600.00 to replace. I got under the car and looked closly and saw no oil up near the head. Looked at it from the top to and didn't see it. I concluded it may be the rear seal. Took it to a local hagerstown, MD shop that I trust and they agreed. When the changed the rear seal they also saw that the flexplate was damaged too so they replaced that. Total repair cost= $392.00. I'm very happy, especially that it wasn't the head gasket! Getting a second opinion or doing a close check out youself can pay.

Oh, could someone tell me the difference between a flexplate and a flywheel? I have the 3-speed Auto transmission.

Spelling...They are the same thing. A flexplate is a more modest flywheel and is used for the torque converter. It also has a mounting location for the torque converter.

Good job on getting the second opinion. Rear main seal would have been my first guess though, not the HG.

Follow-up to my oil leak story.

The Flexplate had to be replaced because it developed a nasty grove in it due to the buggered up seal. So
