Why do you want to swap out the heads? The DOHC head flows better than the SOHC.

Because ive read that the sohc cam has a quicker take off and i figured with the dohc's pistons creating better ratio it would even be quicker than the sohc stock. But i dont know very much about the neons so any info would help. I just figured it would be cheaper for parts to.

Replied to your post in the general Neon area. DOHC is a better choice all around.

Quicker take-off? Bah... A quater of a mile is plenty of time for a stock DOHC to womp on a stock SOHC...

This is a first - a DOHC to SOHC

Well with a DOHC to SOHC - you have to change out the piston - I guess going to SOHC all you have to change is the Head - it is a direct bolt on.

Where did you read that SOHC has a quick take off compared to a DOHC?
I was just browsing trying to find stats to compare the SOHC to a DOHC for performance - I would like to know since I just raced my DOHC Neon againts a SOHC Neon this past weekend.

A SOHC dyno will show a little more low end torque/power over a DOHC. But we're talking a pretty narrow, virtually useless band (under 3500 rpm). Even in my SOHC, I'm never below 4k rpm when I'm looking for power. 5k+ is preferred... and the DOHC's definitely have me there.

I guess people hear about the SOHC's "low-end torque" (particularly compared to similar engines of the time) and somehow equate that to faster take-off. Ignorant magazine "journalists" or "performance enthusiasts" who's knowledge never progressed past 2-valve carb'd engines keep propogating stupid ideas like that. How else can you explain a major automotive magazine stating that the new Mustang GT (F-Stock, and a dog in its own class) handles better than the RX-8 (B-Stock, 8 of 10 top spots in the Nationals, including the top 3)?...

If I take a really tight cone and opt not to shift into 1st, I can come out of it a little better than a DOHC doing the same I suppose. But that happens how often? If I was doing this Neon thing all over again, I'd go DOHC no question.
