Default transmission question

Hey guys i was just wondering if it would damage my transmission to change the fluid in it. its a manual and has over 234,000 and it still has the same fluid in it that came from the factory. I've heard from some people saying that to change it now would just cause problems for it and then other people say that it wont. would it?

If it shifts fine, leave it alone. The fluid is for the life on the tranny.

That is only true for an auto transmission. What happens is when you change it it loosens up any crusties (technical term) and they clog valves causing no more transmission.

das is right. unless you got water in it, there is no reason for gear oil to break down.

the "crusties" can happen with both auto and stick trannys, autos ARE more likely to see probs for reasons stated. some sticks use ATF (BUT NOT THE NEON) as a lube and some just gear oil (i thought a shop was f'n me till i looked it up). UNLESS you are willing to do a mtx rebuild leave well enough alone. non-synth oils don't break down if exposed to normal heat. if you are running low on oil, look for the gear oil that has no add pack/detergent pack that will break up the "crusties" and starve your tanny for oil. just my 2 cents.

I think its kinda weird how it never needs replacement. It has to break down sooner or later. Best left untold I guess.

Sorta like, how kamakazies(sp?) wear helmets when they fly? (yes look twice, they do)
